Microplastics Are Everywhere-and I'm Not Cool With That

Hey friends. If you’ve been watching my “30 Days to a Low-Tox Home” series, you already know we’ve been doing some serious swapping—plastic kitchenware, polyester sheets, sketchy sponges, toxic undies… gone. But let’s talk about the why behind all of it: microplastics.
What the heck are microplastics?
Microplastics are teeny tiny plastic particles (think: smaller than 5mm) that come from bigger plastics breaking down over time. They’re literally everywhere now—air, water, food, breast milk (yep), and probably floating in your coffee right now if it passed through a plastic lid/filter/cup
Some microplastics come from obvious stuff:
Plastic packaging
Synthetic clothes (hi, polyester)
Food containers
Water bottles
Even your toothbrush
Others? Not so obvious:
Tea bags with plastic mesh
Face scrubs with microbeads (still legal in some places!)
Laundry lint
Disposable diapers and wipes
Your vacuum cleaner kicking up plastic dust like it’s confetti
Why should we care?
Let’s get real—these aren’t just annoying. They’re toxic AF.
Microplastics can carry phthalates, BPA, and other endocrine disruptors that mess with your hormones.
They’ve been found in human placentas, lungs, and bloodstreams.
Babies are estimated to ingest way more microplastics than adults .....like why??
And because these plastics don’t break down in the environment, they build up. In fish. In soil. In drinking water. It’s a forever kind of problem—unless we start doing something about it now.
What I’ve been doing (and sharing)
In my series, I’ve been tackling this one swap at a time. Here are a few of the swaps I’ve made recently to cut down microplastic exposure in my home:
Glass storage containers instead of plastic Tupperware
Organic cotton sheets instead of polyester blends
Natural sponges + scrub brushes instead of plastic ones
Stainless steel sippy cups + bottles+bowls/plates
Reusable beeswax wraps + silicone sandwich baggies
Natural fiber baby clothes + blankets whenever I can
Making my coffee at home NOT in a plastic maker
Not buying any plastic toys (for the most part!)
No plastic cups/plates/bowls for picnics or summer time patio times
No plastic kitchen utensils
Each swap might feel small—but it’s not. You’re not just reducing your family’s exposure; you’re reducing what ends up in landfills, oceans, and eventually our bodies.
So… are we doomed?
Nope. Not on my watch. The good news? You can make a difference. Start with the things you use every day. Start with the things your baby chews on (because you know everything ends up in their mouth). Start with your laundry routine, your pantry, your lunchbox—whatever’s doable.
And if you need help? I’ve got you. This blog and my videos are full of swaps, recs, and zero-judgment vibes. Just one swap at a time. Make sure to follow on TikTok + Instagram
Let’s ditch the plastic, not our standards.
