The Dark Side of Sunscreen: Why Most Store-Bought Sunscreens Are Loaded with Toxins

Sunscreen is supposed to protect us, right? That’s what we’ve always been told. Slather it on, avoid the burn, and bask in the illusion that we’re making a healthy choice. But what if I told you that most conventional sunscreens are loaded with toxic chemicals that do more harm than good? Yep, the very thing we rely on to guard our skin can actually be absorbing (literally baking!) into our bodies and causing serious health concerns.
The Hidden Dangers in Store-Bought Sunscreen
Many sunscreens on the market contain endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and skin irritants that can wreak havoc on our bodies......great, again with the wreaking havoc on our bodies. Here are some of the worst offenders:
1. Oxybenzone – One of the most common UV filters, oxybenzone is an endocrine disruptor linked to hormone imbalances, reduced sperm count, and even developmental issues in children. It absorbs into the bloodstream within minutes and has been detected in urine, breast milk, and amniotic fluid.
-Words to look out for on the labels Benzophenone-3 (BP-3)
2. Octinoxate – Another UV filter, octinoxate mimics estrogen in the body and has been linked to thyroid dysfunction and reproductive toxicity. It’s also a known environmental toxin, contributing to coral reef destruction...like fuck its not enough we are killing ourselves but the coral reefs too.
-Words to look out for on the labels Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Octyl Methoxycinnamate
3. Homosalate – This chemical builds up in the body over time, interfering with hormones and potentially causing reproductive and developmental toxicity.
4. Avobenzone – While it’s better than oxybenzone, avobenzone degrades in sunlight and can break down into toxic byproducts that increase skin sensitivity and inflammation.
-Words to look out for on labels Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane
5. Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate) – This form of vitamin A may sound beneficial, but when exposed to sunlight, it can speed up the development of skin tumors and lesions.
-Words to look out for on labels Vitamin A Palmitate
6. Parabens & Synthetic Fragrances – These preservatives and artificial scents are linked to skin irritation, allergies, and hormone disruption.
-Words to look out for on labels Fragrance (Parfum) Methylparaben, Ethylparaben and Butylparaben
What Should You Look for in a Safer Sunscreen?
Not all sunscreens are toxic! When choosing a sunscreen, look for the following safe and natural ingredients:
• Non-Nano Zinc Oxide – This is the safest and most effective broad-spectrum UV filter. It sits on the skin rather than absorbing into the body and provides excellent protection without toxic side effects.
• Beeswax & Natural Oils – Ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax create a protective barrier while keeping your skin moisturized.
• No Synthetic Fragrances or Preservatives – Avoid parabens, phthalates, and anything labeled as “fragrance” without a clear ingredient breakdown.
• Tallow-Based Formulas – Grass-fed tallow is rich in skin-nourishing vitamins and is an excellent base for sunscreen without toxic additives.
THEN WHAT THE HECK SHOULD I USE??
My Go-To Clean Sunscreen: Sky and Sol
If you want a sunscreen that actually protects your skin without poisoning your body, I highly recommend Sky and Sol’s Tallow-Based Sunscreen. It’s made with grass-fed beef tallow, non-nano zinc oxide, and nourishing oils, providing broad-spectrum protection without a single toxic ingredient.
I’ve been using it just since last summer and LOVE it, and not only does it keep me protected, but it also moisturizes and heals the skin instead of drying it out like conventional sunscreens do. I don't have that nasty oily feel either! With my fair skin, it is very easy for me to get red and FAST and I can honestly say I never got burnt this last summer. Safe enough for pregnancy too!

A Vegan-Friendly Alternative
I understand that not everyone uses tallow-based products, so for those looking for a vegan friendly alternative, Badger Sunscreen is a solid option. It’s a much cleaner and safer choice compared to conventional sunscreens. It’s made with non-nano zinc oxide, organic oils, and beeswax, without the nasty chemicals found in most drugstore brands. If you prefer a plant-based sunscreen, this could be a great alternative. I use Badger brand for some of my baby products and chapstick!

Final Thoughts:
We deserve better than toxic chemicals disguised as sun protection. By choosing a clean, non-toxic sunscreen, we can protect ourselves from sun damage without compromising our health. Next time you reach for sunscreen, take a look at the ingredient list—your skin (and hormones) will thank you.
